13 Word Review: Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road (2008)
Directed by Sam Mendes
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet

Geez that was a downer. Fifties-era repression + guilt + abortion = definitely not Titanic II.

Turn the Page

First of all, sorry for not posting anything this past week. But, hey, it was Christmas!

Anyway, some news. I got a new job! I'm leaving my newspaper job to work in health care reporting. I'm pretty excited about the change, so we'll see how it works out.

Posting may be light in the next few weeks as I transition into my new job, but then again maybe it won't be. I guess I'll leave you guessing.

Wish me luck.

Jersey Shore caption contest results

And the winner is...BillFoxEveryone!

"Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand,"- Phil Collins

The answer incorporates Tyson's cameo in The Hangover, and also expresses a sentiment that many of us probably feel about the cast of Jersey Shore.

Photo Caption Contest: Jersey Shore edition

So I've had a few of these contests, and people usually like them. Come up with a clever caption or quote, win a prize. YOU name the prize. The cap is $1 million worth of goods or services. Or something I already own that you may like.

In case you don't know, that's the cast of "Jersey Shore" (somehow) with Mike Tyson. If you haven't seen "Jersey Shore," quietly leave your desk, walk to your car, drive home, and turn on MTV.

Winner announced Wednesday. Good luck.

My Case For: Love Actually

Every network has one or two ubiquitous, go-to, fill-the-void movies.

AMC = Rambo

BET = Beauty Shop, Belly

MTV = Scream

Comedy Central = How High, Orange County

TBS = Anything with Jim Carrey

For USA, that movie is Love Actually. I had never seen this movie (or even heard of it, maybe?) until a few years ago when I saw it on the aforementioned USA. It only made $59 million in the United States and Canada, and $239 million worldwide, ranking it behind such box office juggernauts as Crocodile Dundee II, Wild Hogs, and Cliffhanger.

So I gave it a shot. And I bawled like an eighth grade girl.

For the uninitiated, Love Actually is a series of interconnected stories about love (duh) and its effects on the characters.

There’s the newlyweds, the stand-in porn stars, the British-Portuguese couple, and a bunch more I can’t remember right now. Oh, and it’s set the five weeks before Christmas, so it’s full of caroling, gift buying, and holiday parties.

Anyway, yeah, I cried the first time, and I almost always cry a little when I see it. It’s a dumb movie, but one with a whole lot of heart.

Try watching it and not crying when Sam runs through the airport. It’s impossible.

Thank you

So yesterday, this little site turned one. Dec. 16, 2008, I launched bradfordpearson.blogspot.com as a place to host some of my clips, and maybe rant about music or whatever.

It's now turned into something that I never envisioned: a hobby, and a time-consuming one at that.

23,585 visitors have been to the site in the past year, from places like New York, Maryland, and Slovakia.

So, thank you Slovakian reader. And everyone else. I try to tailor my posts to things I like AND you like, so if you have any suggestions send them along. If not, thanks for just reading.

13 Word Review: Observe and Report

Observe and Report (2009)

Bouts of hilarity strung together with an insipid, boring plot. Aziz kills though.

When your video game obsession begins to cloud your judgement

Mortal Kombat, worth a lifetime of humiliation whenever you go to the beach? Maybe.

Actually no, it's not worth it. Unless this tattoo is on the world's largest 11 year-old it's not worth it. But if this IS an 11 year-old, well done sir! You have not only skirted every state's tattoo laws, you have also given me a reason to smile.

Via Aziz.

My Case For: rainy days

This is not a case against sunny days, but rather one simply FOR rainy days.

When it’s sunny out you feel bad about doing nothing. When it’s raining and you actually do something, it’s commendable.

“You went outside? Today? Well done, sir.”

The math on today’s rainy day was pretty simple:

Things I did because it was raining:
-eat cookies
-watch “Sunshine Cleaning”
-watch “Star Trek”
-watch football
-not move for four hours

Things I didn’t do today because it was raining:
-finish my pesky Christmas shopping
-wear different clothes than yesterday
-exercise
-move

Even if everything else equals out, cookies are always better than exercise, so rainy days win.
